Starpics Photographer Interview
Photographer : Peter Schellig

  1. Can you tell us about yourself briefly?
I’m Peter, living with my family at the beautiful Lake Kochelsee in the bavarian mountains in Germany. My way to the scenic spots in the european alps is not very far. Being outdoors with the camera allows me to escape from my everyday work on a rescue helicopter.
  1. Can you tell us about what you are currently working on?
Currently I’m focusing on landscapes in the european alps and arctic surroundings in northern Europe. The light conditions with the special colors in the north are incomparable, especially in the winter.
  1. What made you decide to be a professional photographer?
This happened automatically, it wasn’t an active decision. The more intensive I spent time with photography, the more people got interested in my work. Although I’m still working full time in my original job as a rescue specialist. This gives me the freedom to go outside and photograph only the things I’m interested in …
  1. What’s your photographic style?
I like to photograph peaceful landscapes, only with a little bit of changes in Photoshop & Co. When it comes to animal photography, I’m most interested in portraits.
  1. How do you educate yourself to take better pictures?
I’m reading all kinds of literature and try new techniques, when I’m outside. And then, studying the works of other photographers is a very important part. Not to copy, but to learn.
  1. What kind of gear do you use?
I’m using Sony mirrorless cameras like the A7r II and different lenses from 16-600 mm. I tried several filters and now finally decided to work with Kase Wolverine filters because of their excellent quality and color neutrality. Of course most of the time I use tripods like the Feisol Elite CT-3472.
  1. When do you feel happy as a photographer?
When I’m able to spend time in a breathtaking landscapes, getting at least one good picture.
  1. When was the most difficult time as a photographer? How did you deal with it?
I didn’t have any difficult time as a photographer. Lucky one …
  1. What was your most memorable experience in this photography field?
I’m a little bit Aurora addicted. Since I’m living in the middle of Europe, those moments watching the polarlights up in the north are very special for me.
  1. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? Or What photographic ambitions would you like to achieve?
I would like to give more people an understanding of the beauty of nature and the joy being outside with the camera. And my pictures have to become better …
  1. What would you say to people who would like to be professional photographers?
First: Only photograph, what you love! Sometimes I’m asked to do weddings or family events. Because this is not my subject, I always kindly decline those requests. And second: Nowadays, it is important to have an additional income. I would not recommend to concentrate only on this business. There are too many excellent photographers outside …
