If you’re suffering from a lack of motivation, or feelings of depression or stagnation in your life, it could be due to a lack of self worth.

“Self worth” isn’t a term that we see thrown around a lot, and it can be awkward to approach. Think of it as a step above self respect. Having self respect means that you feel that you are valuable as a person, while self worth means that you feel valuable among people – that you feel that you bring something special to the table, that you are valuable.

If you’re a younger reader, you may feel a low sense of self worth because you may feel like you haven’t learned or accomplished as much as those around you. If you are an older reader, you may have just entered a new space in which you feel less qualified than those around you, or perhaps you recently tried something, and it didn’t work out and it damaged your sense of self worth. Whatever your situation is, there’s nothing wrong with the feeling that you need to earn a sense of self worth provided that you know where to start.

Volunteer

Volunteering can be a great positive action to improve self worth.
Volunteering is great for self worth for at least two main reasons. The first is that it can lend a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

By volunteering, no matter what you do, you are giving your time and energy in order to help those who are less fortunate than you. Maybe you didn’t graduate at the top of your class or that last project at work didn’t go the way that you hoped, but every volunteer should feel that they are doing meaningful work and that their efforts are appreciated.

The other reason that volunteering can improve self worth is that it involves using your talents in a supportive and unique environment. Learning new skills or learning how to use your skills in new ways can both be great ways to discover or increase your potential in an environment that is likely to be more supportive and less judgmental than a school or work environment.

Learn Something New

Learning new things can also help to improve self worth.

Whether or not it is information that you might see as immediately practical, there’s a certain sense of accomplishment in knowing that you know something. It makes it easier to feel like a part of the conversation when you are socializing but it also may come in handy one day.

If you are a younger reader, you may be skeptical that learning can improve your self worth. After all, everyone around you is being forced to learn every day and you are all learning the same material. While this can make it difficult for you to feel valuable, learning something new that you are passionate about can help you to feel a bit less like another face in the crowd. Join a club devoted to your passion, or just try to find some time on your own to do some reading and then find people that you can share your interest with.

Change Your Perspective

The most important action to improve your self worth is to change your perspective.

It may not make much sense, but we often improve our senses of self worth by trying to prove ourselves to other people. You should be able to earn a sense of self worth by taking notice of how far you’ve come in your journey rather than comparing your pace or position to that of those around you.

Everyone is different, and no one was born with all of the knowledge, experience, and skills that make them valuable in the positions that they forge for themselves later in life. Other people aren’t better than you because they got there first.
