A 2012 water contamination story.
When I saw the slick of pollution in the Pacific Ocean I immediately knew what it was. At the time I was near the beach known as Bubu Gump's, in Kailua-Kona Hawaii.
The effluent dumped by cruise ships makes it's way onto the local beaches, and surfing breaks. I was utterly shocked to see it, but understood that it was common place after talking with some local folks about the filth.
There were people and animals exposed to sewage that day in Hawaii. I felt horrible seeing little kids and their families playing in the surf. But what can you do? What was I to do?
I ended up calling the fire department. It seemed like someone should be altered to the slick of sewage washing onto the town's beaches. They did come down and look at the beach and bay. Said they didn't see anything. It was sickening.
The boat days fill the cities for miles around and bring thousands of dollars to the economy while simultaneously craping on the environment which brings the tourists to visit in the first place.
