يُعرّف التلوّث بأنّه إضافة مواد دخيلة إلى البيئة والتي لا تنتمي إليها بالأساس، أمّا تلوّث الماء فعادة ما يعني تراكُم مادةٍ أو أكثر في مياه المسطحات المائية المختلفة كالمحيطات أو الأنهار أو البحار، مما يسبّب دماراً ومشاكل للثروة الحيوانية وللبشر، وقد عرّف تقرير هيئة الأمم المتحدة عام 1969م تلوّث المحيطات بأنّه: (إدخال مواد أو طاقةٍ في البيئة البحرية (بما في ذلك مصبات الأنهار)، بصورةٍ مباشرةٍ أو غير مباشرةٍ؛ عن طريق أنشطة الإنسان، ممّا يؤدّي إلى إحداث آثارٍ ضارةٍ، مثل الضرر الذي يلحق بالموارد الحية، والمخاطر التي تلحق بصحة الإنسان، وكذلك إعاقة الأنشطة البحرية؛ مثل صيد الأسماك، ممّا يؤدي إلى انخفاض جودة استخدام مياه البحر والحد من وسائل الراحة).[١] يمكن للمحيطات والبحيرات والأنهار والمياه الداخلية الأخرى أن تنظّف كميةً معينةً من الملوّثات بشكلٍ طبيعيٍ عن طريق تفريغها بشكلٍ غير مؤذٍ في أماكن معينة، فمثلاً إذا تمّ سكب كوبٍ من الحبر الأسود في نهر، فإنّ الحبر سيختفي بسرعة؛ وذلك لأنّ حجم النهر كبير جداً مقارنة مع كمية الحبر المسكوبة بتركيز قليل، مع العلم أنّ الحبر لا يزال في النهر؛ لكن عند وجود مثل هذا التركيز المنخفض فلن تتم ملاحظة المادة المسكوبة، وبالتالي فإنّ مثل هذه المستويات المنخفضة من المواد الكيميائية في الحبر لن تُنتِج أيّ مشكلةٍ حقيقية، لكن عند سكب جالون من الحبر في نهرٍ كل بضع ثوانٍ بواسطة أنبوب، فإنّ النهر سيتحوّل بسرعةٍ إلى اللون الأسود، وبالتالي فإنّ المواد الكيميائية في الحبر يمكن أن يكون لها تأثيرٌ سريعٌ جداً على نوعية المياه، وهذا بدوره يمكن أن يؤثّر على صحة جميع النباتات والحيوانات والبشر الذين تعتمد حياتهم على هذا النهر، وبناءً على ما سبق، فإنّ تلوث المياه يعتمد على كمية المواد المطروحة في النهر وكمية المياه الموجود في ذلك النهر.
