RE: You could remove every Confederate statue in the USA tomorrow… (rant)

in #politics7 years ago (edited)

I do agree that we are ignoring the root of the problem we are having in America but I can't agree with you on the unimportance of tearing down those statues.

why are statues built. To commemorate great accomplishments or people in history. People glorify the people and briefs of those people because of it.

If there was a statue of a nazi leader up in a community of Jews, would removing that statue not change a thing? I mean we could learn from this dark time in history cause he might have been a brave soilder according to your argument lol.

No matter how much we progress as a society there will always be a group that is oppressed and a group that are the oppressors, and statues that remind us of this is just another social construct that continues separates us!

Loved reading your rant by the way and this comment is meant to just start a convo and not meant to offend! It's all love haha

I get it, lol. Trust me takes a lot to offend me.

Would like to say that a statue of a nazi soldier in a Jewish community is unlikely. ;-)

But I get what you're saying. My thing is I don't find remembering of the past offensive. And I would be worried that in all these attempts to rewrite history it's easy to forget it. After all where does it end? They want to rewrite classic literature to remove offensive words. I'm wondering if we'll need to redo mount Rushmore because Washington owned slaves and Abe didn't do enough for racial equality.

If we do need to remove such stuff I just wish people could talk it out in an intelligent manner and find better alternatives to violence over inanimate objects.

And you're right that there will always be those who are opprossed and those opressing them. Sad as that is.
