GUN CONTROL Debate Cannot Neglect Foreign Policy

You may fancy yourself a fierce advocate for gun control, and there is a valid case to be made domestic re-evaluation of how loosely the 2nd amendment enables the grey-area we see blowing back on us today. Most people are horrified when we see people slaughtered for no apparent reason, and we’re right to want to stop it. All of our energy and organizing will likely lead to substantial reforms that will hopefully save lives.

However, it’s irresponsible and ignorant to fight so vigorously to protect the lives of innocent gun victims in America without addressing how our foreign policy literally has led to the death of millions of people across the planet, also by the hands of American made weapons.

There are some estimates that over 20 million civilians have died as a result of American military interventions since WW2. Over the past 70 years (and way before that), our deceptive government and colluded media have tricked the American public into supporting wars that dramatically increase profits of weapons manufacturers, strengthen fossil fuel extraction and mining companies holdings, and benefit international banking interests. All of these conflicts are funded with American tax payer dollars.

Simply by filing your income taxes, you are supporting the murder of millions of people with guns made in America. Not just hand guns and assault rifles, but with highly sophisticated drone technology and precision bombs, state of the art killing gear that the weapons industry fancies itself innovative by testing on foreign populations. These creations have no valid contribution to society. This is what happens when we put profits over people, and deceive a tax-paying and fearful population into supporting a conflict they know nothing about, that doesn't confront their ‘front yard’.

When it comes to a handful of teenagers being slaughtered at home, we become justifiably outraged and sprung into action. With the intent of protecting all innocent life, we adopt as our moral imperative the need to limit the use of deadly weapons. Yet, when millions of children across the planet are bombed year after year by the United States, we remain devastatingly silent. It’s time we value kids from Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia, Nigeria, and others the same way we value kids from the US. If any life is valuable and worth protecting, then ALL life is valuable and worth protecting.
