Why you shouldn't vote for the president.

The presidential elections have so many issues, most of which are pointed out by the losing side on the following day: “The electoral college is outdated”, “the same two states decide every election”… But I seem to have a different issue with the election; it matters too much.

Every year our country becomes less of a union of states and more of a single nation. Which sounds good, until you see the problem. Voters in Florida have no idea how to govern people in Utah, voters in Ohio are voting on what would be good in Texas, yet their votes have an affect on states with completely different needs.

Today it seems like our government has essentially forgotten about the 10th amendment. If almost have of the country opposes the Affordable Care Act, why is it in place in all 50 states? Only the states that want it should have it; more specifically, each state should make their own health care bill, and their own everything bill, not regarding countrywide issues and things like healthcare are local matters.

States like California complain that they give way more money to government in taxes than they receive while other states complain policies are forced upon them they don’t want. The solution is simple, limit the power of the federal branch. This is a union between once independent states; it is not a single nation divided by lines to make governing easier.

However, the main point, “you shouldn’t vote”, actually has a much easier argument. It does not matter. I don't mean the president doesn’t matter; unfortunately, today, they matter too much, rather that you individual vote does not matter. The past election had 140, 000, 000 voters, the chances of that being decided by one voter is less than 1 in a billion. (I apologize that it is just an estimate, the actual calculation required computing power i do not have). If that is a chance you’re willing to vote for, I advise considering one other possibilities, dying one your way to the voting booth: about 1 in 7 million. You have a higher chance of dying trying to vote, than affecting the election.

There is a little flaw with this, it may be worth it to go to the voting polls to vote on more local issues where you have, while still incredibly small, a chance of making a difference. But the energy it takes to check the president box, would be a waste.

What can you do instead of voting for the president? Anything else. Maybe think about handling the political issues facing you on a local or state level and not attempting to make it a national issue. The country as a whole does not need to decide on the “issues” of healthcare or education.
