I guess I'll start the ball rolling by explaining what I think.

I think that we did not get our moral code from religion...
We invented religion to codify and explain (and personify) our pre-existing sense of moral obligations to each other.
Then (somehow) it became more about the invented personality, than the moral code that spawned it.
(and now, most people just back their team; with absolutely no examination of the reasons our ancestors embarked on this journey in the first place)
