Anyone noticed how f*cked the UK is right now?
Ever since I woke up on the morning of 24th June it has felt oddly as if I woke up in the parallel universe where we actually voted to leave the European Union. And we have. The markets took an immediate shitbrick:
The exchange rate hasn't been so bad since for three decades. This self inflicted wound has led to a whirlwind of resignations, as everyone bolts as soon as they realise they might be expected to clean up the mess:
24 June - David Cameron - Prime Minister
27June - Two thirds of the opposition shadow cabinet resign in an attempt to make Jeremy Corbyn resign
28 June - Roy Hodgson - England Manager
30 June - Boris Johnson Leadership Contender
4 July - Nigel Farage - UKIP Leader
11 July - Angela Leadsom Candidate for Prime Minister
Suddenly, the most stable country in Europe has become aware of its own polarisation and culture war.
Britain is unsure of its place in the world. At a time when Europe needs leadership, it seems that Little England is destined to float away to somewhere remote in the mid-Atlantic. Unless the person assigned to that resigns. Fuck sake.
EU is also doing retaliatory actions against the UK. Kind of assholish and another good reason not to be part of the EU. I live in the US though so not really my place to say.
I can see why you say that. I voted to remain through gritted teeth, precisely because unelected bureaucrats had a lot of power. But I don't blame the EU for 'punishing' the UK - we just stuck up a collective finger not only to pooling sovereignty, but also to the peoples across the continent who may now be forgiven for feeling unwelcome in the UK.
I actually heard a bit of the reason some people wanted to leave the EU was because the MEPs for the EU didn't have as much power as they should since the two other parts of the legislation that make the decisions are unelected. I then found out I may be off on that quite a bit and just read some bad information. It bothered me to see the EU had those unelected parts that got to make decisions. Then again... like I said I'm not in the EU so it is purely scholarly for me and hoping my fellow humans get treated well. I don't think being retaliatory is very respectable. Pretty childish and emotional. Unless the goal is just to scare anyone else from ever attempting to leave the EU. Even that motive though I find despicable. If it is good you shouldn't need to intimidate people into staying. The old saying of Lead by example. I hope leaving turns out good for the UK. I think it can. There are tons of countries out there that are not part of the EU. The UK wasn't prior to 93 either and the world did not suddenly burst into existence then. :) Good luck, you and your countrymen are in my mind.
