Let's talk about culture #1 - Ubuntu
No, I am not talking about the operating system. I am talking about the philosophy of Ubuntu. There is a good reason the OS shares names with this culture, it actually sees itself as part of the Ubuntu movement. But more on that later.

The Philosophy of Ubuntu
The term was coined in the 19th century in South Africa. It roughly translates to “kindness”. In the middle of the 20th century the movement and philosophy of Ubuntu started forming and has now reached many political thinkers and spiritual activists like www.lebenskraft.tv . The idea of the Ubuntu is rather simple: If people around you are unhappy you cannot be happy, so you try to be generous and kind hearted to others. It is a voluntaristic system - you can not force someone to care about others. There is even a natural urge to do so: would you stand idle when there is a small child in need and you could help? Do you really think this is moral thought ingrained into you by society? I believe it is a primal instinct and Ubuntu cherishes this instinct. Tellinger with his South African Party, is one of the most prominent ambassadors to Ubuntu.

My personal opinion
I am loving it! Ubuntu puts one of my reasons to be socialist first and creates an almost religious movement around it. Ubuntu also involves spiritual energy, but I know too little about that subject, maybe You can add something? I would love to know more. I am not a huge fan of Tellinger, though it might be because he is a politician. The notion of "no money" is also concerning to me. Money is a useful tool, it is just abused by the people in power. At my old work place I used Ubuntu, but I did not like it. It was mainly due to the setup though; someone thought it was a good idea to make one proper installation of the OS and clone it for all other PCs... I installed it on my private PC, when I was searching for free video editing software. It runs pretty smooth when you install it by yourself. It is much faster than Windows and pretty intuitive to understand.It is open source and meant to give the people a decent alternative to Windows and iOS. With all this talk about Ubuntu I think I will at least install it as an alternative OS again.
I moved from Ubuntu, and I was early supporter from beta period, to Solus. Ubuntu is more dedicated to business.
Explains why we used it at work :D. To be honest I am mad at the direction Windows decided to take. I still use the Windows Explorer as my main tool, but Windows tries to go all iOS on us with one drive and other ... not good things :). I am too lazy to get used to linux and I want all my games to run without hassle, but at some point I will have to look deeper into it, I guess.
Well @politics-trail, I don't understand the interaction between socialism and ubuntu, to be honest :-) The whole linux operation system and its clones are based on "ubuntu" in the actual meaning of the word - or, in other words: open source. I doubt that any of the founders of the idea do have any socialist ideas, even if they belong to the left, which by far not all of them do.
Which makes ubuntu and its forks "ubuntu" in my eyes it the fact that they enable less techcnically interested people to take part in the blessings of a fantastic and secure OS. Am I wrong?

Perhaps you've been conditioned to shy away from anything of 'the left'. Certainly it is not a capitalistic idea to share freely the resources of the commons.
Perhaps! Or maybe even the opposite ... Maybe it even hasn't got anything to do with left, right, middle or whatever categories people tend to use to categorize phenomena of the world?
Yes, I agree that these words lose meaning out of context.
To be honest I only used Windows and Ubuntu so far. I also heard about many other linux systems being free, irritated me a little. And yes Ubuntu is very easy to understand only thing is that it has the "close window" x-button on the wrong side ;).
Thanks for the clarificaton, buddy! I thought there must be more to the OS. Ubuntu itself means much more than I managed to tell, but I only know about the movement since very recently.
Thanks for your answer! All linux-kernel-based OS on GPL are open source - which is not the same as "free" in this context. But nearly all of them are free also. There are a lot of very nice and useful alternatives to Ubuntu out there, but I better do not start some Linux-Flame-War here ... I am an absolute computer idiot, but I have been using Linux distributions for 10 years now without any problems. I couldn't live without it! But if you are happy with Windows - why not? Never change a running system - wasn't it like that?

It is interesting that you made the link with Ubuntu. I don't hear much about Ubuntu if it weren't for my CS roommates. Do you think this will last?
I am not sure, I like the basic values of it, but so far I failed to see any specific uniqueness to the philosophy. It makes me happy to see people try to be more caring on a personal level and not only talk about "caring for people"as a political tool, though.
Sounds pretty similar to Karma! Obviously there are going to be differences, but if you do good for others they tend to reciprocate that goodness :)
Ubuntu sounds very familiar indeed. Many would even claim that Christianity is also based on "Nächstenliebe". Nächstenliebe is actually a very good translation for Ubuntu, I think.

I like Ubuntu because a lot of people give me their old slow computers that come back to life with Ubuntu. It's great for people who just roam the internet.
