You're reasoning is quite sound. However, there were a lot of factors in this story that gave off racism signals to a lot of people.
- Affluent White Neighbour hood - There is a perception that rich white people are the most racist, than you're average white person.
- Police - African Americans and police encounters don't really get good headlines nowadays and probably most people thought it was another case of police brutality.
- Starbucks - Many people don't know about how liberal or left wing Starbucks is, they have a general bad notion that big multinational corporations are always the same and they have gender biased rules against minorities.
I totally agree 100% with what you said and its one of those rare cases where the men are crying wolf, normally it'd be the other way around.
And that’s a major problem with the media and how they report information. The story was framed from the beginning to make it appear as race played a role.
That's the kind of stories they profit off the most.
