Whether people are willing to admit it or not, our actions and attitude toward governance seems to be if it benefits me then to hell with those it negatively effects.

Absolutely. It is a self serving belief to impose unjust rules laws taxation on other for personal gain. People feel disconnected from other because the government is the one doing the dirty work.
