False Choice

in #politics7 years ago

As a Master Degree psychology student, I had a professor who described a method for handling recalcitrant children. A parent has a child who, when told to "wear these clothes" or "eat your peas," refuses and puts up a fight. Heads butt and, no matter who wins, stress ensues.

The method for this child to to give the child false choices:

"You chose, outfit A or outfit B."

"You chose, peas or green beans."

It does not always work, but it works surprising often. Stress is reduced for both parent and child. The child believes he has taken a decision when he was really given a false choice. The true choice was the parent's.

I recently read an [article](https://steemit.com/politics/@careywedler/obama-killed-the-anti-war-left-steemit-exclusive). In it, there was a picture of someone holding a sign that said, "Voting is my superpower" and this lesson from my psych professor came to mind.

The voting public is told, "Select candidate A or candidate B. Your vote matters!"

It seems to me, as with the child above, the voters are given a false choice.
