Working on a piece about Nixon Watergate and anonymous sources

Hard to read a political piece in main stream media today without reading quotes or information attributed to anonymous sources. Many journalists when confronted with the critique of sloppy, anonymously sourced journalism point to Watergate and the work Woodward and Bernstein did for the Washington Post in the 70's--they bring this up to provide "proof" of the need to source anonymously to break big stories. I'll examine just how dangerous this new trend has become and how pointing to the Watergate journalism as a defense is way off the mark.
