You're exactly right imo, that people are fighting each other. Something feels "different" in the whole Trump era, like the news cycle is increasingly petty. It was always sensational, but in the past it was more like they covered actual substance in a sensational way. Now it's like "what will rile people up" is the storyline. Like a Paris Hilton sort of effect, newsworthy for being in the news.

And then, the worries that people subconsciously have about the state (about living under a violent power structure and the harm this does to them) become misdirected to each other. They blame some demographic group instead of the actual violence/power.

It's almost like it's evolved away from getting people to actively believe in statism and more towards a strategy of distraction, to at least slow people from opposing it.
