Republicans Pull Desperate Last Attempt To Shut Down Mueller's Investigation
Donald Trump would stop at nothing to make sure that any ties that he has to Russia are not exposed. As special counsel Robert Mueller continues his in depth investigation into the connections between President Trump, his administration, and Russia, Trump and his team seem to get more and more anxious.Mueller was appointed in May, with the responsibility of conducting an in depth investigation into Russia’s interference within the election, and any ties that may come to light between the president’s campaign staff and Moscow. Now, a Republican lawmaker, Rep. Ron DeSantis, proposed an amendment that would cut funding from the special counsel’s Russia investigation. The cut to the funding would happen 180 days after the amendment becomes law.DeSantis’ amendment would stop Mueller from being able to probe farther into “matters occurring before June 2015” which, surprise surprise, was the month the Trump announced his bid for United States president. The amendment is just one of many that was tied to a government spending package. The House is to consider all of the amendments within the package, including the Mueller one, when they return from the August recess. While this amendment may have been filed, there is no guarantee that it will receive a vote on the House floor. The House Rules Committee has the capability to discard amendments that they consider to be inappropriate.Several House Democrats have been making efforts, and pushing amendments, meant to protect Mueller’s Russia probe, at various times since it started. Trump’s loyal Republicans have been ever so eager to stop the investigation at whatever costs. However, there are those who believe it should carry on, unobstructed.Ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Nita Lowey of New York, has proposed a measure which would prohibit the Justice Department from obstructing Mueller as he works. It is quite sad that a measure such as this is even necessary to consider, as the Justice Department, one would think, would be looking to seek justice. No matter how much Trump and his merry band of followers within the House try to stop the Mueller investigation, it seems that there are many pushing back, which one can only hope is enough.
