A comment on your closing statement:

Obviously when we create our new model we won't all agree with each other about the best direction to take it, but we've got to overhaul the old one first.

Do we really need to overhaul the old model before creating the new one? When I see "overhaul", I think about all that energy which would need to be spent trying to change the existing system. This seems to be another clever trap to keep us all working within the existing box (monetary system, energy system, ridiculous laws, etc). Why not spend that energy directly on creating the new model which would over time, with enough people involved, cause the old model to wither and die?
