Drag Queen Storytime?
It's always been strange to me that we have something called Drag Queen Storytime. Drag Queen Storytime is a event where drag queens read stories to little children, frequently taking place in libraries, and less frequently in schools. Drag queens are males who use makeup and clothing to exaggerate a female appearance. This is done for entertainment purposes.
The reason given for instituting Drag Queen Storytime is to habituate young children to the LGBTQ community, so that children can be taught to see members of the community as normal. Forgetting all the religious/social/cultural concerns, let's assume that this is desirable. I never understood why Drag queens were the model to use for this. Why not just politely ask any willing gay, or lesbian, or transgender person to lead a storytime with children? Why look for Drag queens? As I understand it, people in the LGBTQ community just want to blend into society and not be looked at differently from anyone else. Drag queens seem the opposite of that. I would dare say that 99% of gays and lesbians just look like regular people, anyone on the street. If we are to introduce children to that community, why not start with them?
