Citizens Angry over Huge Salary Increases in Small CA Community
City Manager Gets a 33% Raise Right Before He Retires?
Pension Spiking at its Finest!
The Residents attending a December 12, 2017 Madera City Council Meeting were upset about top city officials receiving huge pay increases while the city suffered a budget deficit of nearly a million dollars. You must understand the CA pension system to see just how outrageous these raises are.
The City Manager's salary will be based upon the final three-year's compensation he receives. So when he receives a large raise a couple years before retirement, the taxpayer's are on the hook to pay the increased pension for the duration of the Manager's retirement, and his spouse (at 50% of the pension amount, assuming she survives him) as long as they live.
Residents are right to be upset. Who authorized such an increase? The City Council had to approve the increases. I can say that I have never approved a salary increase for ANYONE larger than 4% and never that large even two years in a row. We need to be diligent about how much we pay our public servants.
