RE: Here's Who Will Be the Next President

in #politicslast month

I'm surprised you are adressing this subject this time, in the past you mostly held back on that before elections.
So you reckon it will be Harris? Logic would suggest that - but then, whats logical these days?
The US election systen, with the de facto 2 party election, is certainly not desirable. But on the other hand, more parties does not mean better politic. Germany is the living proof for that.

The only comforting though is, that it doesn't matter much which party or which president is in power. Because the real power is in the hands of entirely different people - and they dont need to be elected. If that can be called "comforting".

Sort:

No ... not comforting! But true, especially in the last four years. One reason why people in Washington hate Trump is that they can't control him, which is also a big reason why many people like him. He never did much to beat down the bureaucracy, though.

I do an election column every four years, and I wasn't lying when I said my success rate is around 50%. I'm pretty confident this time, though: at the last minute the Democrats always seem to have a few boxes of ballots stowed away somewhere, just in case, and they pretty clearly intend to empower illegal immigrants to vote. I don't like most of the Democratic parties goals and policies--but neither party ever manages to get much done.

Also Trump is only a marionette, a 80 year old bag of hot air in love with himself. He was briefed what his role is already last time, I think I spoke about that already. No president is allowed to have own plans. May be the last one who did was Kennedy - but its only guess by me, I could be wrong.
Yeah, the "comforting" was meant sarcastic... who ever wins, it wont change a thing. And stability, isn't that what people want?

At least its what they tell the people here. Despite everything is going down hill, except for the prices. But if someone points that out, he is branded as a populist, neo nazi or simply a lunatic. And as such should not be allowed to take part in elections. Thats the modern democrathy model according to the established parties.
Man, we are so screwed...

I agree that we're screwed! I don't agree that Trump's being led around by the nose. The fact that he won't toe the line is EXACTLY why all the in-people in government and politics hate him so much. He's a loose cannon, which is both the danger and the advantage with him, and it's what attracted most of his supporters.

As for being in love with himself, there hasn't been a Presidential candidate who wasn't, at least not since Carter.

Of course he is an actor. Its what he does best - doing business is not his strongest side, as the record shows.
And if he would actually try to "drain the swamp", the next assassin aims 2 inches further right. Or he has a tragic accident, or something.

But of course its true that they are always like that. You wont get into that job if you are not an egomaniac.
However, Trump is showing it too deliberately, with his golden rooms and all that. Btw., did you hear about the "Swiss" watches he is selling now?

Well, in less than a week we'll know who made it. Not that it will be a good news, but at least this mess is over then. Well, lets hope so.

Pretty much everything I said would happen, didn't. There are some Democrats yelling "fraud", though, so we'll see.

I was actually not surprised that Trump won. Perhaps a little bit about how clear it was at the end.
The democrats just didn't have a convincing candidate, as usual. Beginning with the total desaster around Biden and then replacing him with Harris, who basically had no reputation at all.
What they need is someone with charisma, and less than 100 years old. But who that could be, I have no clue.
Anyway, for the next 4 years it will get interesting. But I expect less dramatic changes than some people predict. He is not the emperor of America, who can do what he wants. I spoke about this before. But here will be some turmoil for sure, in some respect. He may take back some treaties, that he had taken back in his 1st term, and that were reinstalled during the Biden reign. But I doubt he will touch the big things, like NATO, the Ukraine support, Israel and so on. Well, we'll see...

Yeah, Trump isn't nearly the danger to democracy he's made out to be--especially since he already had four years as President, and didn't do any of the awful things they've been predicting.

But it was the Democrat's race to win or lose, and they really fouled it up. Harris spent four years doing absolutely nothing; her one big job was border security, and there was none. If they'd removed Biden when his decreased mental capacity first became obvious, she'd have had time to build up a reputation; but I think the Democrat Party thought she'd just be an embarrassment, so why not sew up four years with her first?

The Dems need to draw back from their far-left leanings, and find someone with charm and brains, like Clinton. Not that he was a great human being, but he understood diplomacy.

Yes, someone with charisma and brains and someone younger, like Obama and Clinton were. Or a "hands on" guy like Carter. And that goes for the Republicans as well, obviously. This is Trumps last term, unless he declares himself king or something.

Of course Trump will create the usual embarrasment - he is Trump after all. Stopping the Ukraine war in 2 days, making Mexico pay for stuff, teaching the Chinese about trade behaviour, things like that. Which is all just hot air, but "beautiful". And everybody who says differently is fake news and does not get invited to his next birthday party. :)

Other than that - I think its just another 4 years wasted for the US. Because what you guys really need is more "socialism", meaning more common sense decisions. Things that are brushed off as "socialism" each time someone demands them. Like adressing the health system desaster, the homeless and drug crisis, the migrant problem and such. All that needs to stop - even if it hurts some big corporations and lobby groups. That is in part pretty similar in Germany, btw. May be not as drastic, but it exists.
But for that it needs politicians not only with charizma, but also with balls of steel. I have no idea where to find them.
