Political ideologies.
I don't wanna make things simplistic, but in general, most political arguments are between ideologies best described as...
Authoritarianism/collectivism/communism/dictatorship/fascism/nazism/neoconservatism/progressivism/socialism/totalitarianism, etc
Versus ideologies like anarchism/capitalism/free markets/individualism/liberalism/pacifism/peace and prosperity/voluntarism, etc
There's differences between the terms, but the umbrellas here are more unifying than not. One group relies on coercion, and the other consent. That's the important bits at the end of the day.
Left and right are meaningless. If right is overall preference for tradition over change, and left is overall preference for change over tradition... some traditions are worth preserving and some change is worth pursuing. But the above seems pretty obvious.
