Flopping a pair in poker (heads up hyper turbo edition)

in #poker7 years ago

I am a winning heads up hyper turbo player.

Today I am going to shed light on a move that everyone should be doing in 1-20bb poker. If you start using this in your strategy your win rate will skyrocket.

The action goes like this

By check-raising the flop you do a few things.

  • You make your opponent fold a lot of hands with 20-35% equity (however if playing against a passive opponent he likely won't cbet these kinds of hands which makes this tactic non-viable) eg. AK,JT, KJ type of hands
  • Sometimes get called by worse hands like 74, 56, 58, 54 and sometimes A high.
  • When you do get called by a better hand you still have about 20% equity which is better than drawing dead
  • You provide a disincentive for your opponent to cbet the flop at a high frequency

The main reason to checkraise in the spots is that it has a higher ev than just check-calling. If you feel like the ev of check-calling becomes higher you should definitely do that as you will have to adjust to different opponents. The reality is that some opponents just don't bluff, which is good for us in that it makes our decisions easier.
