Making Money with Steem and Pokemon Go -- or, How the New Economy Is About To Get Really, Really Weird

What A World We Live In

It is an interesting time to be alive, to say the least. How many would have predicted just 10 years ago that we'd have hundreds of cryptocurrencies worth billions of dollars in market capitalization on the free market?

How many others could predict that we would be catching Pokemon in the real world?

(Some have predicted in hindsight that this is the beginning of the end of our species. We respectfully disagree.)

The Craze Will Continue

Already, players are reporting they've completed their Pokedex by catching all of the Pokemon currently available. This requires a great deal of patience and commitment, but it's because many players have been playing almost non-stop since release just a couple weeks ago.

Even Nintendo could not have predicted the staggering level of success the app has had. Sure, it is a covert spy tool for Google, and thus, the government. But guess what? People don't really care.

They just want their Pokemon. And this opens up potential opportunities for entrepreneurs and businesses, hopefully like you.

Attract Players To Your Business

The most obvious way to attract customers to your business is to purchase and setup a Lure Module.

A lure lasts for 30 minutes and attracts Pokemon to the area around it. Just open the Pokemon Go app (it's free to download), click on the local Pokestop. The diamond changes into a circle if you're close enough:

Just click the empty oval below the name of the Pokestop once you click on it, and you'll be able to place a Lure Module if you have one in your inventory.

The amount this can do for your business can't be understated. Even if our small local town, we've seen dozens of people of all ages flock to lures at all times of the day and night. Yes, we've seen many people are still out at 1am-2am.

If you're a restaurant or cafe living near one or more Pokestops, there is a good chance you can earn a lot of extra business over the coming weeks and months by staying open late and advertising that you are placing lures at certain times.

It costs 100 Pokecoins for a single lure, or 680 Pokecoins if you purchase a bundle of 8 lures. Pokecoins can be purchased for USD through Google Play or the App Store, depending on your type of phone. It costs about $1 per 100 pokecoins, and the price per coin goes down when you buy in bulk.

Typical free-to-play model - no surprise there.

Just announce the Lure Module on your local Facebook page (every community has one) and on your local Craigslist, announcing the time that the lures will be placed. You'll be shocked at the response, we can almost guarantee it, as long as you give enough lead time. Just a day or two is fine.

If you run the math, you can see it costs you much less than $2 per hour to run non-stop lures. (More if you are lucky enough to have multiple pokestops near you.)

What If You Don't Have A Business?

Then you should get to playing Pokemon Go. That's because the creators of the game are going to be opening up the ability to trade soon. The pokemon you catch - and perhaps even the items you have in your inventory, some of which are NOT purchasable through the shop or normal means - are going to become valuable commodities.

Think about it. The SECOND that you can freely trade Pokemon and/or items between characters and accounts is the moment that those digital assets become worth something.

And we all know that digital assets are DEFINITELY worth something, don't we?

We wouldn't be the least bit surprised if we saw some of these Pokemon or PokeItems on the coming Steem marketplace. (Devs - we cannot wait for this - the potential is huge!)

After all, there have been multiple reports of people selling their Level 20+ Pokemon Go accounts for $100+ already. THE DEMAND IS ALREADY THERE!

Think This Is A Bad Idea?

I'll leave you with a closing thought...

You might be stuttering right now.... "b-b-b-but these KIDS are just interested in their game, not buying anything...they don't even have any money!"...

...just remember that these "kids" can all somehow afford mobile phones with data plans. You can't put the Pokemon Go app on a non-phone device unless you're a l33t h4x0r.

They have access to capital that could be going to you, whether it's to your business...or for the pokemon (digital assets) you've earned on your phone.

It's a whole new economy out there - go get your share. (And share your upvote, please!)
