I appreciate your distinction between the traditional haiku and the freestyle haiku. Translations have shown that the beauty of a haiku exists in more than syllable count (a restriction more suited to the nuances of Japanese language).

My favorite line is "like prowling fireflies." It reads well and makes for a great simile about the fires. Thanks for the post and I look forward to more.
