street light moon vine

midnight
rain drops become wine
as moon vines bloom
while we sing a shanty tune

should we go down again
down to shunga town
where anything can be done
with your permission
sweat sliding down
breath mingling
the inside of our fear
in an alabaster morning
dawn rising as we fall

in this town
streets are impermanent
and the number on your door
keeps moving
keeps me moving even though
i want to come in
you won't let me
yet memories
won't let me be

i passed you
in the alley near
some abandoned theatre
i did not know you
no it wasn't true
but you invited me in
in that night next to midnight
into your secret
shanty garden

you were
looking for madness
i was just mindless
there on the corner of
sunset and vine

i was a street light
walking the pavement
the moon was your mistress
but then you found me
it was all over
we were
all over

on the back door step
we heard the band play
as we sat rocking
in the back row
a street light
exploded
i made a crash landing
into your arms

you didn't mind
until the next daybreak
seeing the mess
all over all over
all of our madness
had gone gone
like moon flowers
that bloom only
at night

i remembered then
who i was
as you closed
the door behind me
how easily i forget

blood becomes rain
when streets lose direction
and i walk the pavement
once again
in our shanty
moon vines grow
in a jar of alabaster
and why you
recalled why i left -

the broken glass
your awful fear

that madness
our moon vines bloom
only at night
