BLACK AND WHITE(A SPOKEN WORD POEM by an African teenager)

in #poetry7 years ago (edited)

Growing up naive of black as a youngstar,
I asked my grandpa how they lived in the 60s black.

He said son listen,
We lived like how you live today.
With no character,modesty and respect.

We were blessed.
We were the best generation ever
We played and laughed all day.
No TV.
We talked with real friends not facebook usernames
We drank natural orange juice
Not thawed-water-glucose-sugar-color-andGodKnowsWhatSoEver-Added
bottled orange juice
manufactured from countries where oranges aren't grown

We didn't kill and bomb one another in the name of religion.

We didn't steal to buy
ADIDAS or NIKE shoes
We walked barefooted but never got ill

We spent time with real friends
Not spending fours years of our life looking down
on phones,playing games,and watching movies.

We didn't have touch screens that made us loose touch.

We didn't reveal our panties for iphones

And you...... you live in a digital insanity

And I said cool,
But grandpa,You know what you've missed?
We are white.
Millenials.

We have created machines to plough our farms.
We have the ability to travel
Far and wide.....in seconds,
Across the oceans .....in munites,
To space in hours.
To places you could have never dreamt of.

Our lives aren't perfect but we know everything.
It's a barrier of key strokes
And my good friend Google
Will tell the the diameter of the earth
all in 0.25s

You see we have super powers.
And how can I forget,
That we don't navigate the heavens with kites anymore.
Because we can fly,
Higher than the eagle.

We don't loose our loved ones anymore,
because of an insect of the size
of a dot made by a marker pen.
We fight and we win.
Ebola, elephantiasis,HIV/AIDS,ZIKA.

We are inventors,
redefining life and
creating the future because we understand that,
life was created by people not more smarter than us....
This is why our lives have never been thesame

We don't fear what we dont know.
We respect women.
They have a role
in God's master plan of creation,
so crucial that we can't do without them.
We understand that all me are equal
Whether White or Black
Asian or American
Indian or Pakistani

We understand freedom better.
This is a generation of bringing dreams to reality.
A generation of less violence like never before.

It was a dream a moment ago.
You were wishing on shooting stars.
And we land whistling on stars.
It was a dream just a moment ago.

But now all the way from Ghana
to europe I can still he him world wide
When he says
'The ting goes skrrrahh, pap, pap, ka-ka-ka mans not hot'

And I say hi to my angel on facebook.
We follow each other on twitter.
Share our colourful memories on instagram.
And when she travels,
we kill the distance barrier
by video calling on whatsapp.
And as if that is just not enough,
we play on snapchat.

And at the end of the day,
we email Elon Musk at SPACE X
for a ticket to mars...

We changing lives.
We are redefining live.
We are changing the world.
because we are creating the future.
