I always try to tell an experience people can relate to, maybe not make them feel as alone.
This way, opening up doesn't feel as hard.

hmm. people don't need to relate to their own experiences. Sometimes, they like to feel something that they don't feel in their life. Our brain has strong empathy; so you do not need to experience and relate to something to feel it. Keep that in mind ;)

That's true but seeing other people are going through/have already gone through some bad stuff you're currently going through always helps.
Feeling like you're the only one "wrong" on the face of Earth is a really lonely feeling, if you get what I'm trying to say :)

I do get your point, but most times being understood is more important than being related to.
