The Slumbering Beast (Original Poem)
Some have smelt his cholered breath, or sensed his talons keen
Some have felt his rising strength, but few his face have seen
Some forget him, deep interred, his menace never bared
Some have set him on their foes, yet fled in terror shared
Some have hidden him within, and heav’ly barred his cage
Some have ridden him a time, and paid the rider’s wage.
