When You Lose a Dog

Those dog lovers out there can second when I say that dogs are more than just animals. They really become part of the family and losing your dog for the first time especially can be bery hard. Especially since we as owners are the ones ultimatley making the decision to end their life (putting then down is ultimatley our decision for them). I know when I had to put my childhood dog Latte down this year it was extremely hard for me to do. I wrote a poem about her and entered that poem into a poetry contest just for kicks. Turns out I was one of the few individuals to get published. Consider this a sneak peak of the book Treasured coming out :)

Sweet Latte: An Ode
How is it that you were just here and can no longer be found?,
A soul so joyful nd welcoming with an opened door,
In jitterish steps, like crabs on the shore, imprinting their tracks within my soul.
Staring deep,those glistening eyes,
Will steal your heart as they lure you in whole like the moon.

But I see the light in your eyes; clouding slowly
Your head normally held high. Now sways lowly
And the yellow tint to your eyes bring great pain,
And I knew, no longer could we be selfish with your love.

The day was upon us! To feel the dread of death,
We dwell in the shining moments of our last walk
With aching hearts pushed aside, we wallowed in denial of your last breath.

It was tears-until the bomb took my ability to feel or talk;
With its fury I lost my senses until that moment within me
When you stumbled in, shaking like an earthquake;
The pain like a knife, cuts me in two as i lay you down and you shake,
The serum slows your thumping heart on my ear in what feels like an eternity.
You fight for so long and finally my heart shatters as your eyes close:
Heart- stops , world-slows
The world turns surreal when I am forced, to forever turn from your limp puppet body.
