Bare Bones.

Fervently, stubbornly,
He toils the thick, moist soil.
Muscles taught, swinging pick,
Man lost in thought.
Steadfast, stoic stone stare, standing alone.
Chilled by rain to the very marrow of his bones.
Finally he succumbs.
Heart numb.
Blisters formed on leather toughened thumbs.
The drums of doom sound only in his mind.
Loud as Thors' great thunderous boom.
He the groom, maybe it had been too soon.
Ah! but what a wonderful honey moon.
Clattered in glittering skin, polished like
porcelain she shined.
They dated, dined. Drank wine on the river,
so divine.
No strife, so he'd made her his wife.
Deeper he digs, cutting through twigs and vines.
Winds whip, branches whine.
As he pulled out yet another stone.
His mind peeled back to the life he had once known.
Healthy babe, green eyes, full hair
filling up his entire world.
Father of one, in his arms,
hope once curled.
A sweet, sad smile cracks through
parched, burnt lips.
A mighty swing of hips,
a pile of cold earth flies over his head.
It was such a marvelous time of innocent commotion,
before notions became motions.
For years, he could resist;
Insist it was normal.
Informal teachings provided his divided mind
with quiet, peaceful finds.
Kicking the next root with his boot,
it proved no real threat.
He wiped off some sweat. Hist shirt dark
red and wet.
The dirt now coaxed into place.
A shift of saddened eyes traced
the shape of this mystery.
Waist deep in his misery,
Bare branched trees completing the
dismal scenery.
Wiping his hands, he walks away..broken.
Job done, the voices won.
His two loves buried within his past.
Freedom now, though he knows
it will not last.
