30 Day Poetry Challenge :: Day 14 :: Our Greatest Teachers

in #poetry7 years ago

One day I hope to teach my children
the art of letting go
by jumping in fallen leaf piles
and then thanking the maples for their grace
of shedding what is meant to be shed.
One day I hope to teach my children
the art of reciprocal relationship
by planting a three-sisters garden
where the beans grow up the corn stalk, harvesting nitrogen,
and the squash spills over the empty soil, shading out weeds,
each taking what they need and giving what they can in mutual benefit.
One day I hope to teach my children
the art of fierce protection
by laying in the soil underneath a California Bay,
a tree that secretes chemicals through its roots
to prevent another from encroaching on its space.
One day I hope to learn from my children
how to play again for the sake of playing
by letting them run free
among their greatest teachers,
the maple leaves, corn stalks, beans, squash, and bays.

Nice and inspiring. Expect my entry for the challenge later in the day, I hope you will like it.

Your poem is very nice to me, thank you for sharing it among us

This was absolutely beautiful. I have and hope to continue to instill the importance of the earth and its creatures to my son. We live in a time where everyone in on their phone and trying to escape to another reality. This poem gave me peace and hope. Thank you <3

Beautiful poem...

the adventure called OUTSIDE

rather than the tablets and what not.
This is inspiring and let me remember my childhood to run free @anwenbaumeister

Teaching children through the example of nature... I like that.

the best photo and good day my friend

When it’s my turn to speak,
sort through my harvest
and share what is finest

I want to impress upon the young
that to have an easy life they must
attempt, first, to do what’s hardest

Not to postpone the difficult task
of being and becoming
who they long to be...

Practice: Obedience, Service and Trust —
towards what’s sacred, others, themselves
(with radical acceptance and gratitude)

And to remember that everyday
they will cast their net out wide
and only what is theirs will return.
