Introduction

The human body is amazing in its adaptability. However, you treat them, positively or negatively, your brain and bodywork together to try to figure out the best way to survive. You need look nowhere than modern man to see firsthand the incredible survivability of the human animal. In modern, industrialized nations, we eat and unhealthier diet than we ever have since we first walked out of the caves thousands and thousands of years ago. We are also more sedentary and less physically active than ever.

Yet we are living longer than ever before. Why is this? Why are we living longer even though we are treating our bodies worse than we ever have? The answer is, your body has an amazing ability to adapt to whatever situation you give it. Now, that is not to say that eating large amounts of sugar, salt and flour is the healthiest way to live a long life. Ignoring regular exercise and physical movement and instead spending most of your day sitting or standing still does not promote longevity either. Just the opposite is true.

It is probably not coming as any big news flash to you that exercise and smart nutrition combined for an unbeatable system of health, vitality and wellness in both mind and body, from head to toe. Besides, if you live to be 70 or 80, but the last 40 years of your life are plagued by health problems because you decide you would rather sit and lounge your way through life rather than being active, is that really living?

There are many reasons for you to see regular activity on not just a daily basis, but also every hour or so. There are physical and mental issues that developed when you sit too much and moved to little. Consider the following 6 serious health risks directly related to a sedentary lifestyle with little physical movement, and you might just have enough motivation to get up and get moving every day.

1 - You Increase Your Risk of Stroke, Heart Attack and Heart Disease

The American College of Cardiology has reported that sitting can be as deadly as smoking. Read that sentence again to get the full effect of how deadly a sedentary lifestyle can be. If your job or free time involves sitting around for long periods of time, you are doing massive damage to your body and mind. Cardiologist Dr. David Coven was a part of the study reported by the American College of Cardiology. He reports that while " … smoking certainly is a major cardiovascular risk factor, sitting can be equivalent in many cases."

That study and others prove that the more you sit and stay inactive, the more dramatically you raise your risk of contracting heart disease, or suffering a stroke or heart attack. This is because when you sit or stay inactive too long, "Your body goes into storage mode, and stops working as effectively as it should," according to Dr. Coven. When you are physically active regularly, you keep your heart pumping oxygenated blood throughout your body. When you sit too much you raise the risk of doing damage to your heart. Your heart is a muscle, and like any other muscle in your body, when you do not use it, it becomes weak.

2 - You Increase the Probability You Will Become Fat or Obese

The World Health Organization (WHO) went as far as to say obesity is a worldwide epidemic. They did not say it was a big problem or something that we need to look at seriously, they called it a full-blown health epidemic. A staggering 2 out of 3 people in the United States above the age of 18 is either overweight or obese. Your odds of developing diabetes cancer, heart disease and a laundry list of other health concerns rises rapidly when you have a weight problem.

We just mentioned how your body goes into storage mode when you are sedentary most of the time. This means your metabolism slows down, you begin storing fat rather than using it for energy, and you burn fewer calories and carbohydrates. That is a perfect storm for fat buildup and obesity. Being too heavy is its own health risk, and the more over your naturally healthy body weight you are, you increase the odds that your weight problem will lead to some other serious health issue.

3 – Your Risk of Becoming Diabetic Rises

What is the one of the primary causes of diabetes? It is obesity and being overweight. Simply being a few pounds overweight is an early warning sign for a pre-diabetic state. If you don't change your behaviors, like eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and becoming active more often, prediabetes can lead to diabetes. A simple way to keep your weight in line and your diabetes risk lower is to move around more frequently. This is true whether you are 18 or 80, 25 or 50, and whether you are a man, woman or child.

Sedentary lifestyles lead to a drop in metabolism. As mentioned earlier, this means you do not process fat, calories and carbohydrates the way you should. Since today's modern diet leads to the consumption of much more sugar than is healthy, if your body does not know how to process that sugar properly, your blood sugar levels rise. This can lead to diabetes, which is almost always accompanied by other serious health problems.

4 – You Improve the Likelihood You Will Develop One or More Cancers

We do not know how to totally cure cancer. We can treat it, but we can't totally remove it, so it is best not to let cancer develop in the first place. Cancer dramatically lowers your standard of living in a best-case scenario, and causes death in the worst possible situation. The National Cancer Institute tells us that cancer is promoted by inactivity.

Additionally, they report that 3 sessions of just 20 to 30 minutes of moderately intense aerobic activity each week dramatically lowers your chance of developing any of a wide variety of cancers. Ask any chemotherapy patient or cancer survivor you know how they think about cancer and how it has affected their life, and you will start adding physical activity to your lifestyle as soon as possible.

5 – You Shave Years, Even Decades, Off of Your Life

Your heart, lungs, liver, kidney, skin, brain and all your other organs suffer from a sedentary lifestyle. Your brain gets less oxygen and so does your heart, so your circulation and mental abilities decrease. When your brain doesn't function properly, it doesn't communicate to the rest of your body like it should. This means that any and every process is negatively affected by poor circulation promoted by a sedentary lifestyle. To live as long and as healthy as possible, you need all of your interconnected and related mental and physical systems working properly. This does not happen when you impede blood and oxygen flow, which is what begins to happen only moments after sitting down.

6 – Your Risk of Developing Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's and Other Mental Disorders Rises Dramatically

Sit for long enough and you will find your thoughts wondering. It is hard to concentrate and focus. Sit frequently for years or even decades, and you are practically begging Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and other serious mental disorders to become a part of your life. This is because sitting leads to slouching and bending in many cases. This puts strain on your spinal cord and prevents your lungs from working properly. When you do not breathe deeply and frequently, less oxygen goes to your brain as well as the rest of your body. In the short term this means memory problems and an inability to focus and concentrate, and possibly serious neurological disorders down the road.
Exercise doesn't need to be a dirty word.

Don't think of exercise in the traditional sense. Movement and physical activity that is moderately intense is exercise. This means you just have to get moving. If you have a job that traditionally ties you to an office chair, why not stand up every now and then instead? While you are sitting, you can be lifting weights with your arms or performing leg exercises. There are inexpensive, portable cycling devices which you can tuck under your desk, allowing to keep your legs pumping while you work.

You have probably heard this tip before, but why not take the stairs instead of the elevator? Walk when you usually drive short distances. If you don't have a bike, buy one. Join a local hiking club, or start a walking club in your neighborhood or city. Stand at your sink and wash your own dishes rather than just loading them into your dishwasher. Put a bit of money back in your pocketbook or wallet by doing your own landscaping and yard work rather than paying someone else.

Standing desks are more affordable than ever before. They allow you to electronically raise and lower the height of your desk, so you can alternate between standing and sitting throughout the day. You may have heard about treadmill desks, which are made to allow you to walk, jog or run on a treadmill while you are at your desk. These are all simple ways to make your health a priority by incorporating physical movement into your lifestyle.

Write a plan for keeping physically active on your major calendar. You write everything else down, appointments and important dates and meetings, and isn't your health important too? If you really want to be healthy, you will find ways to become physically active regularly. Remember, this just means keeping moving throughout the day. You don't have to run a marathon or start throwing around heavy weights to get healthier. Just keep moving and get active more often than you are sedentary and sitting, and you can avoid the dangerous health risks linked to a lifestyle with little physical activity.
