“Monopoly”: The Game We Love To Hate
Did you know, in the 2000s, Monopoly was once thought to be obsolete, forgotten, and would be no longer used. However, Monopoly’s annual revenue has proved the opposite. The game sold more than 3 million copies worldwide in 2017 (Donovan 2017). Clearly, Monopoly and board games in general, still maintain their popularity and seductiveness. Read on to know why Monopoly is the greatest game of all time.

  1. The combination between Skills & Fortunes
Monopoly is really a brilliant invention of mankind, it is the perfect blend of strategy and chance. Like a poker game, there is a certain degree of luck, the roll of the dice, and a certain amount of skill are all involved. But, unlike numerous games, Monopoly has integrated flexibility. In detail, players can master their own game, for instance, they can pay money to land on free parking while still maintaining the balance of the game. As can be seen, players are given the chance to totally customize the gameplay.
  2. Designed to be random (Mechanics)
There are certain degrees of strategy with all games. Monopoly is a strategy game, but the strategy is useless if you are still 100% reliant on dice rolls to land on the properties you desire, you cannot control your gameplay and what would happen next as well. A player’s fate is decided when they roll the dice. There is no option for a player to choose which property or square are open to buying, in order to land on, and you have to rely solely on luck. And this kind of random play makes the game even more fun. It must be fascinating that even when you have a basic strategy in mind, you still do not know what will happen next.
  3. It takes like “forever” to end
Definitely, no one likes a short game that ends in just a few minutes. A lengthy game will be a better choice if you want to spend true-quality time with friends and family. On average, the usual Monopoly game lasts between 60 and 90 minutes to finish. As can be seen that this is an ideal method for parents to entertain their kids, and can also be considered as a short-term babysitting way when you are too busy to keep an eye on them.
  4. Educational Value
If you have kids, you want to educate them about math/finance, or even if you are an adult but don’t have a financial education background, Monopoly can still give you a big favor: teaching the financial basics to players. It provides a general tutorial on how to invest, property acquisition, and make a profit from the purchased property. Of course, it is not in great depth like the practical finance courses, but it is sufficient to stimulate your “brain” to think.
  5. Get used to the unfairness. That is life!
Are you wondering why right? Well, the answer is Monopoly is indeed designed to be unfair. It must be cool to experience a down-to-earth game about the world. As you always know, the world is harsh and unfair, and Monopoly seems to be born to gleam on that fact. How unfair is Monopoly? Well, the player who gets the start first and has a lucky strike can be the most likely to win. Starting in the 3rd or 4th turn, the player will almost certainly have to pay rent right away, which will stymie their growth and assure the risk of loss. Yes, it’s unfair, but just the game.
Furthermore, it has become a part of the culture. The game became a monopoly-like itself’s name. It is played by each generation of children around the world, who then go on to buy it for their own children. And now, we are in the 4.0 era, Monopoly has been improved into various modern versions from manual versions to digital versions. Among all, “The Monopolist’’ is the most advanced version, which is the 1st Blockchain version ever of Monopoly. The classic rules are still preserved, and some NFT games’ features are added including staking & farming, auction, and so on… along with extremely beautiful game graphics, and diverse game characters inspired by real-life influencers.
Taking everything into a nutshell, Monopoly shows players a clear target: Push your rivals into bankruptcy. Perhaps, this is the biggest reason for its popularity, which is the indescribable suspense when you send your opponents to the “poorhouse” side while raking in the cash. The good sign is, Board Games like Monopoly still maintain their popularity.
