Father of Pincode System in India.....

We have no idea that there will be a smart person who studied in 'Rajapur' school in Konkan!
His name..
Sriram Bhikaji Velankar

PIN stands for Postal Index Number
Till 1972 ... in the General Post Office, the addresses on the letters were read and divided into departments. But there were many problems. That is, people with the same name, villages with the same name, sometimes someone's letter could not be read properly, and all this for less than so many languages used to write addresses in our country..!! Writing wrong addresses is the birthright of some people!

While going through all these difficulties, as a solution, Sriram Bhikaji Velankar, who was employed in the Post and Telegraph department, implemented the PIN code system on 15 August 1972. Pincode made many tasks easier...

Pincode structure is as follows.
The entire country is divided into 9 zones. These 8 zones are geographical divisions,
While one is specially used for military.

The first two digits indicate the post office. So this chart can be used in this too
11 - Delhi
12 and 13 - Haryana
14 to 16 - Punjab
17 - Himachal Pradesh
18 to 19 Jammu and Kashmir
20 to 28 - Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand
30 to 34 - Rajasthan
36 to 39 - Gujarat
40 to 44 - Maharashtra
45 to 49 Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh
50 to 53 - Andhra Pradesh
56 to 59 - Karnataka
60 to 64 - Tamil Nadu
67 to 69 - Kerala
70 to 74 - West Bengal
55 to 77 - Orissa
78 - Assam
79 - Purvanchal
80 to 85 Bihar and Jharkhand
90 to 99 - Army Postal Service

That means first digit in six digit pincode indicates – division, second digit – sub division, third digit – sorting district and remaining last three digits are the number of that particular post office.
For example 413001 is the pincode of Solapur. It shows the first digit - West Division, then 13 indicates a sub-division of Maharashtra in the West Division, 413 indicates the sorting district, while the last three digits - 001 is the number of a particular post office in Solapur district.

Although writing letters is becoming rarer now, pincode system will never become a thing of history.
