Becoming a Pilot in Hong Kong👨🏻‍✈️ 🇭🇰

Hey guys! Very excited to write my first blog post here (except the intro) Gonna talk a bit about the aviation industry in Hong Kong here 🇭🇰. As I mentioned, getting involved in the industry is not an easy job here, general aviation is virtually non-existent, fortunately, many of the airlines in Hong Kong provides fully funded Cadetships to permanent residents of Hong Kong. This greatly reduces the barriers of entry to become a pilot ! Primarily the people here will apply for the ab-intio cadet pilot programme. Ab-intio means that every thing is taught from scratch, the candidate do not need any flying experience but passion for aviation is essential. The below are the requirements of one of the airline cadet pilot programmes in Hong Kong (other airlines might have slightly different requirements but they are largely the same)

1. Able to pass the ICAO English Test (level 4-5)
2. Physically fit to pass the HKCAD Class 1 Medical
3. Graduate from high school with science background OR
   completed a degree of any discipline
4. Passion for Aviation

The requirements are surprisingly low compared to other professionals! 👨🏻‍✈️

How do you prepare

After giving a brief introduction of the basic requirements, we shall now move to the question how do you prepare for the interviews? There are many preparations that you could work on for the interviews and career of an airline pilot, these preparations are not essential but might increase the likelihood of getting hired (no guarantees here) !

Here are some of the preparations that I will talk about in the coming posts:

1. Aptitude Test
2. Research on the Company and the Cadet programme
3. Theory Courses OR Self Study
4. Courses on Aviation exposure
5. Study Groups (Technical and/or Mock interview)
6. Flight Experience

Aptitude Tests

Before meeting any of the interviewers, in general you will be given an aptitude test of some sort to complete. Even though the failure rate here might not be as high as other parts of the interview process, it is essential that you prepare for every part of the interview ! There are existing softwares for you to get prepared, however the aptitude tests of different airlines are quite different, make sure that you get the right software for the airline that you are applying for!
