** A picturesque fishing port**
Marsaxlokk is a picturesque fishing port and village in the south-eastern region of Malta. The location of Malta’s largest and oldest fishing harbour, Marsaxlokk remains famous for all things seafood! In fact, some of the best fish restaurants in Malta can be found here so it’s the perfect place to sample the local catch.
An open-air market operates daily, but it is on Sundays that Marsaxlokk comes to life. The Sunday fish market is supplied directly from the fishermen’s morning catch. Here a plethora of sights, sounds and smells combine under the canopied marketplace.
Fishing tradition
Though the village has diversified in more recent years, its fishing tradition is still very apparent. Look no further than the brightly coloured Luzzus which scatter themselves across the harbour. These traditional fishing boats are painted in bright blues, yellows and greens and adorned with a pair of eyes to protect the fishermen at sea. To the side of the bay there is St Peter's Pool, a sandy beach popular with families and just a short distance out of town. It offers secluded, turquoise waters which many enjoy diving into from the white rocks above.
Marsaxlokk can be easily accessed via bus route 85 from Valletta which runs every hour during weekdays and every twenty minutes on Sundays.
