Inverkip Power Station 2010 - high resolution photos a couple of years prior to demolition

Although I've talked about Inverkip Power Station previously, I've never posted high res images of the exterior. Recently, when searching through my archives for photos, I came across these two images. Granted, they were taken 10 years ago on a Canon 450D, handheld with an ancient manual focus prime; but they were accepted on a well known stock photography website so what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

This image was taken just as demolition of the oil tanks had begun, as evidenced by the farthest one mysteriously turning orange.

Although the power station had been out of use by this point for years, it still looked active, save for smoke rising from the chimney. Soon after this, the ground lighting was shut off and demolition hastened.

The story in brief: Inverkip Power Station was an oil fired power station on the Clyde coast in the west of Scotland. Its completion in 1976 came as the price of oil had risen substantially and it was no longer economical to operate. It rarely ran except to satisfy peak demand and to provide needed power during the 1984/85 miners strike. It was kept in the strategic reserve, then later mothballed and finally decommissioned, before being demolished in 2013. It is seen here in 2010 just before the removal of the oil storage tanks on the right. In common with other power stations in Scotland, Inverkip lacked cooling towers. Instead, cooling water was taken directly from the sea. You may also notice that the buildings either side of the chimney are an uneven size. This is because while there were four generating units planned, only three were ever built.
