Industrial landscape - Stanlow oil refinery, Ellesmere Port UK
There's a certain beauty in landscapes like this, well at least I think so. This is Stanlow oil refinery at Ellesmere Port UK.
It's not easy to get close enough on land to take photos, especially as this area is so flat. The above was taken from a motorway bridge at 85mm on APS-C. Just to the left of the cooling tower is a flare stack. My (very basic) understanding of the flaring process is it's used to get rid of unwanted byproducts of the refining process and can actually help reduce the environmental impact.
A little further down the road I was able to take this, a nice juxtaposition of industry and agriculture. Again the flare stack can be seen, this time more enthusiastically spitting flames.
