Power of the Fluke
the power of the whale's movement comes from its fluke (or tail but it is called a fluke... not a tail). This wide part of the whale is constantly propelling the animal from place to place in order to find food, escape predators or to find a mate throughout the ocean, which is kind of a big place. The Humpback whale has one of the largest flukes for its body size/fluke ratio, which the width of the fluke can be up to about a third of its total body length.
Impressive, right? Furthermore, one other amazing aspect of this whale species in particular and their fluke is that they have a diving behaviour where they will expose their fluke for the world to see as they disappear into the deep. Well, deep for a humpback isn't as deep as other species but I do greatly appreciate the showing off of the fluke, which allows me the opportunity to snap a nice photo.
