Travelling to Iraq in the troubled times

in #photography5 years ago

Hello, steemians. It's been a while since I last posted from this blog, even though I try to be active daily with curating.
I just came back from my 12 days business trip to Iraq. It's not my first time to visit this "tense" country when it comes to politics and safety. In the last few years it's my 8th time, but almost nothing has changed for that period.

We were settled in Baghdad, but also traveled to Babylon, Karbala, Kut and Basra where we stayed for couple of nights.
As the temperature outside is 40+ degrees Celsius, good thing is that we spent most of the time in hotel's lobby busy with meetings.

During the few trips we took across Iraq, I managed to take some photos. Sorry for the quality, many of them are taken from the car in motion. Some of the scenes are to ugly to share, so I won't show them.

Our transport.

Former residence of Saddam Hussein.

As you can see, ruins are everywhere, garbage on the streets, dilapidated facades, dust...

Luckily, the hotel where we stayed in is great, clean and comfortable, completely different world compared to the rest of the city.

Food is delicious and abundant. Even though I'm sometimes reserved to try something because of the questionable hygiene.

The day before our departure demonstrations escalated on the streets, as you could hear in the news. Government decided to cut all internet connections in the entire country to stop the protestants from massively organizing. We spent the last 15 hours at the airport without internet, because of the announced prohibition of movement.

Coming back home safely.

Do you have to travel to Iraq for business? Thanks for the views from the street as it were. Very interesting. I kinda wish you had shared the scenes that were "too ugly to share". What kind of stuff were you referencing?

Well, we often have negotiations there (as a construction company) and since I'm in charge of Middle East department occasional trips are necessary. Ugly scenes include disgustingly dirty streets, ugly habits of locals, demolished houses, shops and streets, etc.
All in all, the country is in a big mess. :)

Awesome photos from your travel. How did you take the first one? from the hotel? I would also be interested in seeing the ones you are referring to as 'ugly' if it portrays the aftermath of war/conflicts.

Thank you, GG! Yes, the first one is from the hotel in Basra, south of Iraq. Maybe I’ll share some of those pics in future posts.

I visited countries all around Iraq but never made it there but have seen similar sights and sadness for sure and I now why you may not have shared some shots you got

thanks for sharing these shots with us

Thanks for the comment, @tattoodjay. It's not a nice place to be in, for sure.
