Tristagma uniflorum, commonly known as Spring Starflower, is a charming and underappreciated plant that brings a splash of star-shaped beauty to gardens just when it's most needed—early spring. Native to South America, particularly Argentina and Uruguay, this resilient bulbous perennial has found its way into gardens around the world thanks to its delicate appearance, easy care, and ability to naturalize in a variety of settings.
Botanical Background
Belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family, Tristagma uniflorum was once classified under the genera Ipheion and Milla, leading to some ongoing confusion in horticultural circles. Today, most botanists accept the name Tristagma uniflorum, though older garden literature may still refer to it as Ipheion uniflorum.
The plant gets its species name, uniflorum, from the Latin meaning “single flower,” although in gardens it often appears in clumps with multiple blooms. Each flower is star-shaped, typically a pale blue or violet hue, with six pointed petals and a subtle, sweet fragrance. Some cultivars, such as 'Wisley Blue', 'Alberto Castillo', or 'Rolf Fiedler', are prized for their distinctive coloring and vigor.
Growth and Habitat
Tristagma uniflorum grows from small, tunicate bulbs. Its foliage is grass-like, appearing in late winter or early spring, often before the flowers. It thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9, tolerating light frosts and even brief snow cover. One of its most appealing characteristics is its adaptability: it can grow in rock gardens, borders, lawns, or containers, and does well in both full sun and partial shade.
