Day or Night

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

As a follow up to my post yesterday of the Pacific Spotted Scorpionfish. I wanted to present another mast of camouflage residing in tropical waters, the Day Octopus.

Octopus cyanea, also known as the Blue Octopus or Day Octopus, is an octopus in the family Octopodidae. It occurs in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans, from Hawaii to the eastern coast of Africa.

Day Octopus-1.jpg

The reason for their name is that the Day Octopus is active during daylight hours rather than being nocturnal like other octopus species. With a lifespan of approximately 1 year, the Day Octopus grows quickly and is a highly productive species; each female lays between 100,000 to 400,000 eggs.

Finding these little guys can be a challenge, but great to photograph once found. Look for the eye, it the only part on an octopus that doesn't change colour like the rest of their bodies.

Thanks reading.
