Ferdinand "Lake Tan", 1905

All parts of this symmetrical and balanced composition are arranged so as to create a sense of peace. In the cold morning air, the watery surface of the lake shines with the reflected pink light of the rising sun. The landscape is reduced to the main elements, simplified and flattened so that the viewer comprehends the very essence of the species, composed of rhythmic alternation of shapes and colors, without any unnecessary details. Hodler developed his own decorative landscape style, built on bright colors and clear outlines, using the effect of parallel motifs. At an early stage of his work, the artist experienced the influence of Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet. Later, however, in his painting, interest in symbolism with its hidden meaning of objects and the modernist style with its twisting lines and stylized forms manifested itself. The planar linear style, to which Hodler came at the end of life, and the meaning given to them in color, foreshadowed the appearance of Expressionism.
