History of Volkswagen Type 181

Volkswagen Type 181 called Kurierwagen in Germany, Trekker in the UK, Thing in the United States, Mehrzweckwagen (multi-purpose wagon/vehicle), Pescaccia, while the title as "Safari" originated from Mexico State. From birth, VW Type 181 is a typical military vehicle. The doors are made of steel that is easy to dismantle. The window can be removed easily without using the tool. The windshield can be folded. The interior is simple but functional, the seat is flat. It can not be separated from the history that began when the German Army ordered operational vehicles to the Volkswagen car factory. The German Army needs a military vehicle that is tough, cheap and easy to maintain. This requirement is tried to be met by Volkswagen by redesigning military vehicles ever made for World War II, namely Kubelwagen.

The use of VW Type 181 by the German Army was quite long. Until 1992, there were still about 4000 VW 181 units that remained in operation. Even up to 1999, there are still some operating in the German army. When the German army no longer used VW 181, some of these vehicles were sold to the public and some were donated to Turkish and Greek troops.

VW 181 that I use this is a production in 1978, which has undergone a restoration ranging from the color of body paint, rejuvenation of machine parts and the replacement of the brake working system.
