Understanding Canon FD Definitions :
FD = Fully automatic Diaphragm.
L = “Luxury” in combination with the Red Line/Ring on certain lenses that were created for the professional photographer seeking perfection. They provide superior optical performance and have carried this signature look through to their lenses today.
S.S.C. which means “Super Spectra Coating” (multi-coated) Canon introduced new lens coatings which reduce flair and more.
Fluorite – is a naturally occurring crystal that has three special properties that make it eminently suitable for use in lenses − it transmits infrared and ultraviolet light well, has a very low refractive index and low dispersion.
Aspherical – lens elements designed to compensate for distortion in wide-angle lenses, and compensate or eliminate spherical aberrations with a large maximum aperture. This allows Canon to produce more compact lenses than was previously possible using only spherical lens elements.
CANON FD List Sample of Canon nFD 17mm F2.8 Lens (Unicorn), from website
Photo Titled: [•] Departure 9
The 17mm nFD known as “The Unicorn” for being a rare lens. The other 17mm has a max aperture of F4. This is a special lens at F2.8 and more likely a prototype. The focusing ring on the 17mm F2.8 spins only as the F4 version the entire outer barrel turns when focusing. The F2.8 takes very sharp images and up there as one of the best FD lens made by Canon.
This FD lens list will hopefully continue to grow so with your help keep following as it is one big epic project that I think many mirrorless camera users might benefit from knowing what lens to choose.
