Macrophotography in Sabah (Malaysia)

Although we didnt spot much wildlife in Malaysia there we plenty of cool bugs to make some photos of. We recently bought the LAOWA 65mm macro lens which was perfect to get a close up of the creepy crawly world under our feet.

Here are some pictures. We dont know exactly which kind of species they are, but they looked fascinating enough.

Later we found out that this last insect is called a Trilobite beetle. This is apparently a quite rare species living in South East Asia. Not much is known about this bug, but it looks incredible.

Macrophotography is not the most easy thing to do. You need a lot of light and the extreme shallow dept of field makes your images very blurry. You need to have a fast shutter speed (requiring even more light) and since bugs tend to move a lot, you quickly end up with motion blur. Macrophotography is so sensitive that even the tiniest movement from you, your camera or your subject can result into a bad image. To avoid these things we used a stand and additional light whenever possible.

When you get a good result however you can show these insects in a different light to people, and in a perspective that shows the view from their world.
