Hardinge Bridge Information Description
In 1889, proposals for the construction of a bridge on the Padma river were proposed to simplify the communication of Assam and East Bengal along with the undivided India's Calcutta. After 20 years of discussion, the proposal was accepted in 1908. Though the proposal was meant to build a single line bridge, the dual line was kept in final design and constructed.
It is one of the bridges in Bangladesh. The construction of this bridge began in 1910. Construction of the bridge was completed in 1915, which means it takes six years to build this bridge. The bridge was inaugurated on 4 March 1915.
About 24 thousand manpower was needed to build this bridge. The total length of the bridge is 1.81 km. This railway has 296 feet of railway level. The experimental first train was run on the downstream line of the bridge on 1st January 1915.
Under the bridge, the navigation system is very naturally placed. Under the bridge the headway is 40 feet for navigation.
