#1 One of the best views in Sri Lanka - Pidurangala Rock
Pidurangala is a massive rock formation located a few kilometers north of the historical fort Sigiriya, Sri Lanka.
Where as Sigiriya was the site selected by King Kasyapa for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. My next post will be about this UNESCO listed World Heritage Site - Sigiriya.
The view of Pidurangala from Sigiriya has a majestic view and hilly landscape.
When you arrive at Pidurangala you have to stop off at the Pidurangala Buddhist temple.
When King Kasyapa built the Sigiriya rock fortress, he relocated the monks there to Pidurangala, and then renovated and expanded the monastery under his patronage. So you have to cover your shoulders and legs when you pass the temple since it is a sacred meditative retreat for monks.
The climb is adventurous and there is no specific pathway to the top which is the best part.
I stopped to enjoy the view which was indeed breathtaking.
This pond is a home to a variety of water critters, some fish and flora.
A large brick statue of a reclining Buddha.
The final approach to the top of Pidurangala is the hardest part of the climb because it is just rocks and boulders.
But the view makes you speechless and you also get to meet some friendly dogs.
If you want to experience a 360 degree view around you surrounded by nature, do climb Pidurangala when you visit Sri Lanka.
