A Journey through Italy: one photo every day #71 - PELLEGRINO PARMENSE [ENG/ITA]

Pellegrino Parmense è un borgo della provincia di Parma, nella regione italiana settentrionale dell'Emilia Romagna. Circondato da colline sul lato destro del fiume Stirone (410 m di altezza), questo piccolo borgo fu nel X secolo un feudo appartenente ai potenti Pallavicino e in seguito alla famiglia dei Meli Lupi.

Il territorio è attraversato dalle acque dello Stirone, sede di un'area protetta di grande importanza anche dal punto di vista geologico e paleontologico per la cospicua presenza di fossili.
La sua storia risale all'età del bronzo, ma tracce e nuovi reperti, oggi in esame, potrebbero risalire a 4.000 anni fa.

La sua storia è legata al suo castello medievale, che sorge sulla cima di una collina. Fu costruito in posizione dominante a difesa del villaggio, presumibilmente nel 981 da Adalberto Baden, fondatore del Pallavicino, che godeva della protezione dell'imperatore Ottone II. La fortezza serviva a difesa dalle incursioni degli ungheresi.

Nel 1198 il castello fu ricostruito da Guglielmo Pallavicini e da questo momento la storia del borgo fu legata alla storia dello stesso.
La struttura prepotente del castello con le sue mura ciclopiche che la proteggevano dagli attacchi esterni, ha reso il castello leggendario negli anni per la fermezza con cui ha resistito a diversi attacchi.
L'interno è diviso in tre navate da colonne poligonali dovuto al restauro trecentesco, mentre le decorazioni e i dipinti risalgono al periodo dal quattrocento al settecento.

Recentemente restaurato da investitori privati, è tornato al suo splendore originale.
Sulla facciata del maniero le bifore murate e le merlature ghibelline testimoniano le numerose trasformazioni che hanno segnato la sua storia nel corso dei secoli.

L'insieme degli edifici del patrimonio religioso merita di essere visitato: la chiesa di San Giuseppe, il Convento di San Francesco, il Santuario della Beata Vergine Assunta e la Chiesa di San Martino.

Pellegrino Parmense is a town in the province of Parma, in the Northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna. Surrounded by hills on the right side of river Stirone (410 m in height), this little village was in the 10th century a feud belonging to the powerful Pallavicino and later to the Meli Lupi families.

The territory is crossed by the waters of Stirone, home to a protected area of ​​great significance also in terms of geological and paleontological for the conspicuous presence of fossils. His history goes back to at the bronze age, but traces and new finds, under consideration today, might date back to 4.000 years ago.

Its history is actually linked to its medieval castle, rising on the top of a hill. It was built in a dominant position in defence of the village, presumably in 981 by Adalberto Baden, founder of the Pallavicino, who enjoyed the protection of the Emperor Otto II. The fortress might have served as a defence from the raids of the Hungarians.

In 1198 the castle was rebuilt by Guglielmo Pallavicini and from this moment on the history of the village was linked to the history of the manor. The domineering structure of the castle with its Cyclopian walls protecting it against external attacks, made the castle legendary over the years for the steadfastness with which it withstood several attacks. The interior is divided into three naves by polygonal columns is due to fourteenth century restoration, while the painted decorations vary from four hundred to seven hundred.

Recently restored by private investors, it has been returned to its original splendour. On the facade of the manor house walled-up mullioned windows and Ghibelline battlements bear witness to the numerous transformations that have marked its history.
