Bitritto è un borgo della provincia di Bari, nella regione italiana meridionale della Puglia. Si trova a pochi chilometri dal mare Adriatico ai piedi della Murgia di Bari.

Il nome della città medievale probabilmente allude a una distruzione multipla risalente all'XI secolo, oppure alla presenza di due torri, anche se solo una di esse è sopravvissuta.
Bitritto, il cui nome è documentato fin dall'XI secolo, subì, come tutte le terre pugliesi, il dominio di Normanni, Angioini, Aragonesi e Spagnoli.

Era già abitato nel XI secolo secondo un documento del dicembre 1070 relativo alla chiesa di San Tommaso in Locus Vitrictum, custodito tra le "Chartae" della Basilica di San Nicola di Bari.
Già nel 1082 la denominazione Casale di Bitritto apparve nei racconti di quel tempo (da Bretrictum, a Betrictum e Bitrictum, e infine a Bitricti).
I recenti lavori di restauro nel castello hanno permesso di scoprire antichi pozzi datati prima dell'anno mille, spostando così indietro la data di una possibile fondazione della città in epoca tardo romana.

L'imponente fortezza duecentesca, oggi sede del Municipio, è situata nel cuore del centro storico di Bitritto, a pochi passi dalla torre civica.
Il castello, costruito dai Normanni, ha una solida struttura con mura, abbellite da torri e fortificazioni, che testimoniano la funzione originaria della roccaforte, che proteggeva la città.
L'imponente edificio, decorato con balconi e splendide logge, adornato da finestre a triplo arco, è il simbolo della città e il suono di antiche assedi e battaglie echeggia tra le mura e le antiche gallerie.

Da non perdere la Chiesa Matrice Maria Santissima di Costantinopoli, costruita nel 1774 in stile tardo barocco con pietra bugnata. L'altare è dominato da una pala d'altare raffigurante la Madonna Assunta, opera di Michele Montrone del 1865, copia di una pala conservata nella cattedrale di Bari. Tra le altre opere conservate merita una visita il reliquiario in oro e argento che conserva un osso del proto-martire Santo Stefano e la pala d'altare di San Sebastiano.

Cose da vedere: Il Centro Storico, il Castello Baronale Normanno-Svevo, Chiesa Matrice Maria Santissima di Costantinopoli, la "Casa Torre", la Collegiata di Sant'Angelo, la Chiesa di Sant'Antonio da Padova, la Chiesa di Santa Caterina, la Cappella della Madonna di Loreto, la Cappella di San Pietro.

Bitritto is a town in the province of Bari, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. It is located at just few kilometres from the Adriatic sea on the foothills of the Murgia of Bari.

The name of the medieval town probably alludes to a multiple destruction dating back to the XI century, or otherwise to the presence of two towers, although only one of them is survived.
Bitritto, whose name is documented since the XI century, submitted, like all Apulian lands, the domination of Normans, Angevins, Aragons and Spanish.

It was already inhabited back during the XI Century according to a document of December 1070 related to the church of St. Thomas in Locus Vitrictum, kept among the "Chartae" of the Basilica of San Nicola di Bari.
Back in 1082 the designation Casale di Bitritto appeared in the accounts of that time (from Bretrictum, to Betrictum and Bitrictum, and finally Bitricti).
Recent restoration works in the Castle allowed to discover ancient wells dated before the year one thousand, thus pushing forward the date of a possible foundation of the city in late Roman era.

The imposing thirteenth-century fortress, nowadays the seat of the Town Hall, is located in the heart of the old town centre of Bitritto, a few steps away from the civic tower.
The castle, built by the Normans, has a solid structure with walls, embellished with tower and fortifications, which testify to the original function of the stronghold, which used to protect the town.
The impressive building, decorated with balconies and wonderful loggias, adorned with triple arch windows, is the symbol of the city and the sound of ancient sieges and battles echoes off the walls and the old galleries.

Not to miss the Cathedral Church entitled to Our Lady of Constantinople, built in 1774 in late Baroque style with rusticated stone. The altar is dominated by an altarpiece depicting the Madonna Assunta, by Michele Montrone of 1865, a copy of a shovel kept at the Cathedral of Bari. Among other artworks preserved worth a visit the gold and silver reliquary that preserves a bone of the proto-martyr St. Stephen and the altarpiece of Saint Sebastian.
